Originating as a Gold Rush road house, Lac La Hache got its name when a French Canadian fur trader dropped his axe while ice fishing. Many decades have gone by since then, but the "Longest town in the Cariboo" still has a bounty of beauty as big as the fish in the lake.
Resting halfway between 100 Mile House and Williams Lake, Lac La Hache is popular with those who work in either community. The area's lower elevation yields an extended growing season, making it a prime location for small scale gardeners as well as larger farms and ranches.
Popular as a recreational lake, Lac La Hache is perfect for boating and swimming in summer, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter, and fishing all year round. For downhill winter sports, the popular Mt. Timothy Ski Area is less than 30km away.
Famous amongst foodies for the annual South Cariboo Garlic Festival, Lac La Hache has something for everyone, including an elementary school, skating arena, museum, restaurants, a bakery, and more.
